Lüneburg is a Kreis (district) in the northeastern part of Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the southern banks of the Elbe river. Area 1323 km², population 164,300 (2001). The district's capital is Lüneburg.

The district is characterised by the Lueneburg Heath[?] (Lüneburger Heide) in the south and the riverside woodlands along the Elbe. Though most of the district is located south of the river, there is a small portion around the municipality of Neuhaus on the opposite side.
