Lowndes County, Georgia

Lowndes County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 92,115. The county seat is Valdosta. The county is a major commercial, educational, and manufacturing center of south Georgia with considerable forest products including pulpwood and naval stores[?], such as turpentine and rosin[?].

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,323 km² (511 mi²). 1,306 km² (504 mi²) of it is land and 17 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.26% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 92,115 people, 32,654 households, and 22,237 families residing in the county. The population density is 71/km² (183/mi²). There are 36,551 housing units at an average density of 28/km² (72/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 62.00% White, 33.99% African American, 0.37% Native American, 1.20% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.08% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 2.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 32,654 households out of which 35.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.50% are married couples living together, 15.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.90% are non-families. 24.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 15.10% from 18 to 24, 31.30% from 25 to 44, 18.50% from 45 to 64, and 9.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 98.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,132, and the median income for a family is $41,580. Males have a median income of $28,411 versus $20,755 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,683. 18.30% of the population and 13.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.80% are under the age of 18 and 17.30% are 65 or older.
