Litchfield County, Connecticut

Litchfield County is located in the northwestern corner of the U.S. State of Connecticut. As of 2000 the population was 182,193.

Geography The county has a total area of 2,446 km² (945 mi²). 2,383 km² (920 mi²) of it is land and 64 km² (25 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.61% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 182,193 people, 71,551 households, and 49,584 families residing in the county. The population density is 76/km² (198/mi²). There are 79,267 housing units at an average density of 33 persons/km² (86 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.77% White, 1.10% African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 2.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 71,551 households out of which 32.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.20% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 30.70% are non-families. 25.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 5.70% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 25.70% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $56,273, and the median income for a family is $66,445. Males have a median income of $45,586 versus $31,870 for females. The per capita income for the county is $28,408. 4.50% of the population and 2.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.30% are under the age of 18 and 5.40% are 65 or older.
