Lawrence Durrell

Lawrence Durrell (February 27, 1912 - 1990) was a British author who wrote many famous and award-winning novels. He was born in India, and he was sent to England to attend school at the age of eleven, a country that he was never happy in and left as soon as possible. His first novel, Pied Piper of Lovers was published in 1935. In 1935 Durrell, his wife, siblings and mother moved to the Greek island of Corfu where they lived until 1941 when they had to return to England due to WWII.

Lawrence Durrell separated from his wife in 1942, and became peripatetic, living for some time in Egypt, Rhodes, Argentina, and Greece, and finally settling in the south of France. He was married four times in all.

His most famous work was The Alexandria Quartet[?] which was named as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century by the editorial board of the American Modern Library.

His brother, Gerald Durrell, was an important British naturalist and wildlife conservationist[?].
