Lancaster County is a county located in the State of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 11,567. Its county seat is Lancaster[?]6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 599 km² (231 mi²). 345 km² (133 mi²) of it is land and 254 km² (98 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 42.45% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,567 people, 5,004 households, and 3,412 families residing in the county. The population density is 34/km² (87/mi²). There are 6,498 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (49/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 69.95% White, 28.88% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,004 households out of which 21.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.70% are married couples living together, 11.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.80% are non-families. 28.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.71.

In the county, the population is spread out with 19.00% under the age of 18, 5.00% from 18 to 24, 19.60% from 25 to 44, 28.00% from 45 to 64, and 28.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 50 years. For every 100 females there are 86.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,239, and the median income for a family is $42,957. Males have a median income of $30,592 versus $23,039 for females. The per capita income for the county is $24,663. 12.50% of the population and 9.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.00% are under the age of 18 and 11.20% are 65 or older.
