The 
knarr (plural: 
knarren) was the generic name for 
viking trade and mercantile 
ships. Typically they were broader in the beam and had a deeper draught than the vessels used for raiding, the 
longships. They were also less reliant on oars as a means of propulsion and more on the use of sails.
