The most popular keyboard instruments are probably the piano and the synthesizer.

String keyboard instruments:

• harpsichord - may also be called a cembalo or virginal
• clavichord

Wind keyboard instuments:

• Organ
• accordion

Percussion keyboard instruments:

• piano
• celesta

Electronic keyboard instruments:

• synthesizer
• Rhodes electric piano[?]
• Midi keyboard[?] controller

The earliest known keyboard instruments were the organ, the clavichord, and the harpsichord. Early pianos appeared during the 15th century. Early electromechanical instruments, predecessors of the synthesizer, appeared in the 1930s.
