Johnny Rebel, real name C.J. Trahan, is a singer and songwriter from Louisiana who recorded several songs with racist and segregationist themes, supporting "white power" and the Ku Klux Klan. The Anti-Defamation League calls him the original American hate musician.
His songs, with titles such as "Cajun KKK", "We Don't Want Niggers in our Schools", and "Homo Truck Drivin", contain numerous references to the word nigger and one notable reference to Martin Luther King's "baboon mouth". Johnny Rebel's texts criticize the NAACP, refers to Michael Jordan as a "Ubangi" and have references to violence against Bill Cosby and Steve Urkel[?].
Several websites promoting his music relate the story that Rebel's "life-changing" event occurred when his father went off to fight in World War Two, and upon his return, discovered a black man had taken the job he had held. His father supposedly lost his house and sought financial assistance from the federal government. According to these stories, his father was told that he was "not dark enough to even qualify". Critics of this story note that World War Two ended well before any affirmative action programs were instituted.
Johnny Rebel began recording in the late 1960s, during the civil rights movement. He recorded in Jay Miller's studio for Reb Rebel Records out of Crowley, Louisiana. His music is released by Mousetrap Records[?].
Occasionally, there have been rumors that David Allan Coe is Johnny Rebel. Coe has denied any connection.
In an interview in 2003, Trahan acknowledges having written and recorded the songs, after a suggestion by Jay Miller. He stands behind their message, but says that he mainly wrote the songs because of the money. He does not in fact support the Klu Klux Klan, because of their masked operation and their opposition to the Catholic Church.
In 2001, AggWood Records[?] published a compilation album, including a new song by Trahan entitled "Fuck you, Osama bin Laden (Infidel Anthem)", recorded that year in response to the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attack. AggWood Records claims to be the sole copyright holder of all 13 Johnny Rebel songs, and has sent a complaint to Google under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act regarding sites selling bootleg copies.
