Civil rights movement

While the term civil rights movement is often used to refer to the US civil rights movement, in fact there have been a number of such movements in a long civil rights history throughout several countries. In more general terms, the civil rights movement is an ongoing effort, with both global and local branches, to establish civil rights for the citizens of every country worldwide.

Organizations that deal with civil rights issues on an international basis tend to include them under the broader category of human rights. These include such groups as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
