Johan Vilhelm Snellman

Johan Vilhelm Snellman (1806-1881) was a Finnish writer, philosopher and statesman.

Johan Vilhelm Snellman was born in Stockholm, Sweden. His father Kristian Henrik Snellman was a ships captain. His mother Maria Magdalena died when he was only eight years old.

His friends included Johan Ludvig Runeberg and Elias Lönnrot.

He worked as professor at the University of Helsinki and as senator between 1863 and 1868. It is thanks to Snellman that the markka was introduced as the currency in Finland in 1865.

He published the book Läran om staten in 1842.
