Jean Nicot (
1530 -
1600) was French ambassador at Lisbon, Ambassador for
France in
Portugal at the beginning of the 16th century. He introduced
tobacco in the form of
snuff in
1560 to the French court. The tobacco plant,
Nicotania[?], also a flowering garden plant, is named after him, as is
nicotine.
