Indre-et-Loire

Indre-et-Loire is département #37 in west central France, originally known as the province of Touraine. It is named after the Indre[?] and the Loire rivers.

The département is marked by fertile valleys and has four significant rivers: the Loire, the Cher, the Vienne, and the Creuse[?].

Indre-et-Loire is the home to numerous outstanding medieval chateaux that are open to the public.

Tours, the préfecture (capital), was a center of learning in the early Middle Ages.

Sous-préfectures: Chinon, Loches[?].
