Hudson is a city located in Columbia County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,524. It is the county seat of Columbia County6.

Geography Hudson is located at 42°15'4" North, 73°47'6" West (42.251230, -73.785066)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.6 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.47% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 7,524 people, 2,951 households, and 1,590 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,338.7/km² (3,468.2/mi²). There are 3,347 housing units at an average density of 595.5/km² (1,542.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 64.29% White, 24.02% African American, 0.28% Native American, 2.84% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 4.15% from other races, and 4.41% from two or more races. 8.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,951 households out of which 28.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 29.4% are married couples living together, 19.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 46.1% are non-families. 39.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 106.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,279, and the median income for a family is $27,594. Males have a median income of $26,274 versus $22,598 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,759. 25.6% of the population and 23.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 37.7% are under the age of 18 and 13.9% are 65 or older.
