Houston County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 110,765. The county's county seat is Perry, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 984 km² (380 mi²). 976 km² (377 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.81% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 110,765 people, 40,911 households, and 30,233 families residing in the county. The population density is 114/km² (294/mi²). There are 44,509 housing units at an average density of 46/km² (118/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 70.57% White, 24.76% African American, 0.34% Native American, 1.59% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.03% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. 3.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 40,911 households out of which 38.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.00% are married couples living together, 14.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.10% are non-families. 22.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.20% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 31.80% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64, and 9.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 96.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $43,638, and the median income for a family is $50,384. Males have a median income of $36,031 versus $25,537 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,515. 10.20% of the population and 8.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.30% are under the age of 18 and 9.50% are 65 or older.
