Homer Simpson

Redirected from Homer (The Simpsons)

Homer Jay Simpson is one of the main characters in the animated television series The Simpsons, voiced by Dan Castellaneta.

In the show, he is:

It has been indicated in the series that Homer is 36 or 38 years old, but characters do age within the series; in another episode he takes a quiz that indicates he will die at 42 and wails that he has only three years to live. (However, note that Homer's ability to do mental arithmetic is not necessarily reliable.) Different episodes give his birth date as May 12, 1956 or May 10, 1955 or even 17-23-1956 (sic).

Homer and his family probably live at 742 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield. Several alternative house numbers in Evergreen Terrace are given in various episodes, including 59, 94, 743, and 1094, as well as 430 Spalding Way.

He works in the Springfield Nuclear Powerplant, although "works" in this case refers to dozing and eating doughnuts.

While he is not extraordinarily bright, he can get very emotional, especially when it comes to his neighbors, the Flanders family or to troubles related to Bart. He spends most of his time at Moe's Tavern with his friends Carl, Lenny, and Barney. His hobbies include heavy drinking (especially Duff Beer), television, and whatever can create a good storyline for the episode.

On the food front he is particularly fond of doughnuts and also of pork chops[?]. His diet is not a good example to younger viewers and this point is frequently made throughout the series. Homer frequently responds to food with drooling and exuberant postures. He once walked into a room, noticed a pie that someone had thrown on the floor, swooned, and exclaimed, "floor pie!" as though it were a type of food separate from and much more delectable than ordinary pies.

His high school yearbook quote was "I can't believe I ate the whole thing", and it was in high school where Homer met Marge (then Marge Bouvier), whom he later married.

In some episodes Homer is allowed to be a bit smarter: for example it is revealed that he not only was a member of a tremendously successful barbershop quartet, the B-Sharps, but he also wrote their one major hit song, "Baby on Board". Later episodes have also revealed Homer to be the genetic origin of Lisa Simpson's genius. We also learn that Homer isn't naturally stupid: his intellect is suppressed by the presence of a wax crayon in the frontal lobe of his brain, the result of a bizarre childhood mishap. Homer's stupidity is also attributed to the Simpson Gene which is an almost guarantee that male Simpsons will become underachievers.

Homer's middle initial J., standing for "Jay", is a tribute by Simpsons creator Matt Groening to the work of cartoon producer Jay Ward.

Some sources state that Homer was named after the character of the same name in The Day of the Locust[?].

Homer Simpson also repopularized the phrase: "D'oh!"

In the episode where Homer fails to pay money to PBS, Homer sends an outcry for help to the heavens. Since Homer spends very little time in church, he shouts "Save me Jeebus!" and later "Jeebus? Hello? Are you there?" into a ham radio.
