Holmes County, Mississippi

Holmes County is a county located in the U.S. State of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 21,609. It is named in honor of David Holmes, the first governor of the state of Mississippi. Its county seat is Lexington6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,979 km² (764 mi²). 1,958 km² (756 mi²) of it is land and 21 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.07% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 21,609 people, 7,314 households, and 5,229 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (29/mi²). There are 8,439 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 20.47% White, 78.66% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 0.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,314 households out of which 36.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.90% are married couples living together, 31.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.50% are non-families. 26.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.48.

In the county the population is spread out with 32.10% under the age of 18, 12.40% from 18 to 24, 24.80% from 25 to 44, 18.30% from 45 to 64, and 12.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 87.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $17,235, and the median income for a family is $21,757. Males have a median income of $23,720 versus $17,883 for females. The per capita income for the county is $10,683. 41.10% of the population and 35.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 52.30% are under the age of 18 and 36.40% are 65 or older.
