Holmes County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 18,564. Its county seat is Bonifay, Florida6.

History Holmes County was created in 1848. It was named for Thomas J. Holmes, who came from North Carolina to settle in the area about 1830.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,266 km² (489 mi²). 1,250 km² (482 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.28% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 18,564 people, 6,921 households, and 4,893 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (38/mi²). There are 7,998 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.79% White, 6.51% African American, 1.01% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.79% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. 1.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,921 households out of which 30.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.30% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 112.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 113.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,923, and the median income for a family is $34,286. Males have a median income of $25,982 versus $19,991 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,135. 19.10% of the population and 15.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.70% are under the age of 18 and 17.90% are 65 or older.
