Heppner, Oregon

Heppner is a town located in Morrow County, Oregon. This town was orignally called Standsbury Flat for George W. Standsbury, one of the first white settlers in the area. It was later renamed to honor Henry Heppner, who opened the first general store there in 1873. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,395.

Geography Heppner is located at 45°21'22" North, 119°33'10" West (45.356157, -119.552849)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,395 people, 583 households, and 398 families residing in the town. The population density is 437.9/km² (1,138.5/mi²). There are 660 housing units at an average density of 207.2/km² (538.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.70% White, 0.00% African American, 1.00% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.51% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 1.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 583 households out of which 28.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 100.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,421, and the median income for a family is $42,500. Males have a median income of $37,381 versus $20,714 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,729. 13.9% of the population and 11.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.9% are under the age of 18 and 7.0% are 65 or older.

History Heppner was designated the temporary county seat at the time Morrow County was created and narrowly defeated Lexington in the election held in 1886 to determine the permanent county seat. It was incorporated the following year.

Heppner was almost destroyed by a flood on June 14, 1903. The flood was precipitated by a sudden cloudburst and accompanying hail that caused a dam collapse and flash flooding. A wall of water and debris swept down the creeks and canyons and through the town. It has been estimated that 225 people or a quarter of the town's population was drowned. Property damage was reported at nearly $1,000,000. The nearby towns of Ioneand Lexington also sustained significant damage.
