Henry County, Alabama

Henry County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Patrick Henry, famous orator and Governor of Virginia. As of 2000 its population was 16,310. Its county seat is Abbeville.

History Henry County was established on December 13, 1819.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,472 km² (568 mi²). 1,455 km² (562 mi²) of it is land and 17 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.15% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 16,310 people, 6,525 households, and 4,730 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (29/mi²). There are 8,037 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 65.67% White, 32.30% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.00% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 1.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,525 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.90% are married couples living together, 14.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.50% are non-families. 25.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 25.70% from 25 to 44, 25.50% from 45 to 64, and 16.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 90.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,353, and the median income for a family is $36,555. Males have a median income of $29,189 versus $20,827 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,681. 19.10% of the population and 14.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.00% are under the age of 18 and 20.60% are 65 or older.
