Abbeville is a city located in Henry County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 2,987. The city is the county seat of Henry County.

Geography Abbeville is located at 31°33'59" North, 85°15'5" West (31.566367, -85.251300)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 40.4 km² (15.6 mi²). 40.3 km² (15.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.32% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,987 people, 1,172 households, and 787 families residing in the city. The population density is 74.1/km² (192.0/mi²). There are 1,353 housing units at an average density of 33.6/km² (86.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 56.65% White, 39.94% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.85% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 3.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,172 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.8% are married couples living together, 17.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% are non-families. 30.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 23.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 82.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $23,266, and the median income for a family is $37,917. Males have a median income of $26,250 versus $20,603 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,215. 21.5% of the population and 17.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.1% are under the age of 18 and 29.6% are 65 or older.
