Harlem, Georgia

Harlem is a city located in Columbia County, Georgia and is part of the Augusta, Georgia metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,814. Harlem is the birth place comedian Oliver Hardy, in his honor the annual Harlem Oliver Hardy Festival[?] is held each October on main street.

Geography Harlem is located at 33°25'1" North, 82°18'50" West (33.416822, -82.313762)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.6 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.40% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,814 people, 704 households, and 506 families residing in the city. The population density is 277.9/km² (719.9/mi²). There are 763 housing units at an average density of 116.9/km² (302.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 70.95% White, 25.41% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.88% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.10% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 2.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 704 households out of which 38.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.3% are married couples living together, 20.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 80.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,500, and the median income for a family is $36,307. Males have a median income of $27,833 versus $22,098 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,439. 17.0% of the population and 15.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.1% are under the age of 18 and 16.3% are 65 or older.
