Hardeman County, Tennessee

Hardeman County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 28,105. Its county seat is Bolivar6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,736 km² (670 mi²). 1,729 km² (668 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.42% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 28,105 people, 9,412 households, and 6,767 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (42/mi²). There are 10,694 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 57.34% White, 40.97% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,412 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.00% are married couples living together, 17.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 25.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 31.30% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 12.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 116.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 121.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,111, and the median income for a family is $34,746. Males have a median income of $27,828 versus $20,759 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,349. 19.70% of the population and 16.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.40% are under the age of 18 and 20.80% are 65 or older.
