Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,802 people, 2,161 households, and 1,462 families residing in the city. The population density is 264.2/km² (684.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 42.33% White, 56.39% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,161 households out of which 31.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.0% are married couples living together, 24.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% are non-families. 30.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
