Harburg is a Kreis (district) in the northern part of Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated south of the Hamburg metropolitan area. Area 1245 km², population 234,200 (2001). The district's capital is Winsen[?].
The district is named after its former capital Harburg, which in 1937 became a borough of the city of Hamburg bordering to the Landkreis. Today the district of Harburg excludes the former town of Harburg, but it includes several suburbs of the Hamburg metropolitan area. In the south of the district there is the northwestern part of the Lueneburg Heath[?] (Lüneburger Heide).
