Gunter, Texas

Gunter is a city located in the south west corner of Grayson County, Texas and is a growing suburb of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,230.

Geography Gunter is located at 33°27'5" North, 96°44'40" West (33.451331, -96.744479)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²). 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,230 people, 324 households, and 243 families residing in the city. The population density is 316.6/km² (818.7/mi²). There are 345 housing units at an average density of 88.8/km² (229.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 82.36% White, 0.73% African American, 1.22% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 13.41% from other races, and 1.79% from two or more races. 24.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 324 households out of which 43.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.8% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.7% are non-families. 23.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.02 and the average family size is 3.60.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 84.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $40,000, and the median income for a family is $41,957. Males have a median income of $30,625 versus $25,938 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,535. 7.7% of the population and 6.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 7.7% are under the age of 18 and 7.2% are 65 or older.
