Graz (Slovenian: Gradec), with a population of about 240,000 is the second largest city in Austria and capital of the province of Styria. The city is situated on the Mur[?] river, in the southeast of Austria.

Graz was probably established in the 12th century, and it is built around the Schlossberg.

The name Graz is derived from the Slovenian word Grad, meaning castle.

In the year 2003 Graz was promoted to the "Cultural capital of Europe".
