Goettingen (district)

Göttingen is a Kreis (district) in the southeastern part of Lower Saxony, Germany. It is located in the southernmost part of the state. Area 1264 km², population 302,300 (1999). The capital of the district is Göttingen.

The western half of the district is occupied by the Weserbergland[?] mountains. The Weser river origins near the town of Hannoversch Münden at the confluence of the Fulda and the Werra. Further east the Leine river runs through the district from south to north.

Towns in the district: Göttingen, Duderstadt[?] and Hannoversch Münden.
