Gifu

Gifu (岐阜市; Gifu-shi) is a city in the Chubu region of central Japan. It is the capital of Gifu prefecture.

In Sengoku period, the name "gifu" was given by Oda Nobunaga, a feudral lord (called daimyo; he wanted to show his ambition to reunify Japan by naming the province he just acquired after the name of a legendal mountain in China.
