Gadsden County, Florida

Gadsden County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 45,087. Its county seat is Quincy, Florida6.

History Gadsden County was created in 1823. It was named for James Gadsden of South Carolina, who served as Andrew Jackson's aide-de-camp in Florida in 1818.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,369 km² (528 mi²). 1,337 km² (516 mi²) of it is land and 32 km² (12 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.34% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 45,087 people, 15,867 households, and 11,424 families residing in the county. The population density is 34/km² (87/mi²). There are 17,703 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (34/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 38.70% White, 57.14% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.76% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 6.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,867 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.50% are married couples living together, 22.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.00% are non-families. 23.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.18.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.40% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 12.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 90.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,248, and the median income for a family is $36,238. Males have a median income of $27,159 versus $21,721 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,499. 19.90% of the population and 16.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.50% are under the age of 18 and 16.90% are 65 or older.
