Previously referred to as GAIM (all capitals), it is now better known as either Gaim, or gaim. Its name is not to be considered an acronym, nor does it have any affiliation with AOL. It is Free Software available under the GPL.
On Linux and BSD, Gaim integrates well with the GNOME desktop, but does not require the GNOME libraries; the elimination of library dependency enables more users, such as those of KDE, to, more easily, access and use Gaim (GTK+ however, must be installed.) A Microsoft Windows version is available.
