Free Speech Movement

The Berkeley Free Speech Movement was a radical student movement[?] which began at the University of California at Berkeley in 1964. It was founded by a coalition of student groups who were protesting a ban on political activities on campus. One student set up a table in defiance of this ban and was arrested. However, a group of students surrounded the car in which the student was to be transported and staged a sit-in which continued until the charges against that student were dropped. About a month later, the university brought charges against the students who organized the sit-in, resulting in an even larger student protest that all but shut down the university.
