Franklin County, Massachusetts

Franklin County is a county located in the U.S. State of Massachusetts. As of 2000, the population is 71,535. Its county seat is Greenfield6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,877 km² (725 mi²). 1,818 km² (702 mi²) of it is land and 59 km² (23 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.13% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 71,535 people, 29,466 households, and 18,416 families residing in the county. The population density is 39/km² (102/mi²). There are 31,939 housing units at an average density of 18/km² (46/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.40% White, 0.89% African American, 0.29% Native American, 1.04% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 1.61% from two or more races. 1.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 29,466 households out of which 29.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.90% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.50% are non-families. 29.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 25.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 93.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,768, and the median income for a family is $50,915. Males have a median income of $36,350 versus $27,228 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,672. 9.40% of the population and 6.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.50% are under the age of 18 and 8.80% are 65 or older.
