Eusko Abendaren Ereserkia

Eusko Abendaren Ereserkia ("Anthem of the Basque Homeland") is the national anthem of the Basque Country. It should not be confused with Eusko Gudariak ("Basque Soldiers"), the anthem of the Eusko Gudarostea[?] (the Basque National Army during the Spanish Civil War) or with the Gernikako Arbola[?] ("The tree of Guernica"), a popular Basque song.

It was a traditional Basque music. The founder of Basque nationalism[?] Sabino Arana[?] wrote the lyrics. It was used by his party PNV[?] and in the 1930s adopted by the first Basque government.

Its re-proclamation by the Basque Parliament on 14 April 1983 was opposed by several parties that deemed it still to be bound to the PNV rather than to the rest of the Basques.

Biscayne BasqueEnglish translation
Gora ta Gora Euskadi
aintza ta aintza
bere goiko Jaun Onari.
Areitz bat Bizkaian da
Zar sendo sindo
bera ta bere lagia lakua
Areitz gainean dogu
gurutza deuna
beti geure goi buru
Abestu gora Euskadi
aintza ta aintza
bere goiko Jaun Onari
Up and up Basque Country
glory and glory
to its Good Lord from above.
There is an oak tree in Biscay
old strong sindo
bera ta bere lagia lakua
On the tree we find
the holy cross
always our top goal (?)
Sing "Up Basque Country"
glory and glory
to its Good Lord from above
