Erie County, Pennsylvania

Erie County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 280,843. Its county seat is Erie6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,036 km² (1,558 mi²). 2,077 km² (802 mi²) of it is land and 1,959 km² (756 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 48.54% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 280,843 people, 106,507 households, and 71,040 families residing in the county. The population density is 135/km² (350/mi²). There are 114,322 housing units at an average density of 55/km² (143/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.90% White, 6.13% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 2.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 106,507 households out of which 31.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.50% are married couples living together, 12.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.30% are non-families. 27.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 10.80% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 14.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.70 males.
