The Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis is a district in the middle of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Neighboring are the district-free cities Bochum, Dortmund and Hagen, Märkischer Kreis, Oberbergischer Kreis, district-free Wuppertal, Mettmann district and district-free Essen.
|
The district was created originally in 1929 by merging the former districts Schwelm and those parts not integrated into the district-free cities Hagen and Bochum of the districts Hattingen and Hagen. In 1970 and 1975 it was modified a bit during the reorganization of the districts in North Rhine-Westphalia, most notably was the inclusion of the previously district-free city Witten.
Geography The name of the district already describes its geographical location - it is located in the valleys of the rivers Ruhr and Ennepe.
In the middle of the coat of arms is the checked red-white bar from the earldom Mark, which owned the area in medieval times. The two wavy lines above and below depict the two rivers which gave the district its name, the Ruhr and the Ennepe. |
