Until 1974, the station was named "Charing Cross". The name was changed (with a transitional name of "Charing Cross Embankment") so that Strand and Trafalgar Square stations could be merged to become the new Charing Cross tube station.
Above the station is Hungerford Bridge[?] which gives rail and pedestrian access to the South Bank[?] and the Royal Festival Hall[?].
This station serves the Thames river side, Trafalgar Square, the Strand[?] and Charing Cross.
The Charing Cross-Embankment-Strand conundrum (http://metadyne.tripod.com/CHX-EMBconundrum) explains the various names of the tube stations in this area.
