Ellandun was the site of a battle between Egbert of Wessex and Beornwulf of Mercia[?]. Egbert emerged victorious and became the eighth Bretwalda and the first ruler to be styled "ruler over all England"

Ellandun is identified with Wroughton in Wiltshire
