El Paso County, Colorado

El Paso County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2000, the population is 516,929. The county seat is Colorado Springs.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,516 km² (2,130 mi²). 5,507 km² (2,126 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.15% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 516,929 people, 192,409 households, and 133,916 families residing in the county. The population density is 94/km² (243/mi²). There are 202,428 housing units at an average density of 37/km² (95/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 81.19% White, 6.51% African American, 0.91% Native American, 2.53% Asian, 0.24% Pacific Islander, 4.70% from other races, and 3.91% from two or more races. 11.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 192,409 households out of which 36.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% are married couples living together, 10.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% are non-families. 23.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.60% under the age of 18, 10.50% from 18 to 24, 32.50% from 25 to 44, 20.70% from 45 to 64, and 8.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 100.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $46,844, and the median income for a family is $53,995. Males have a median income of $35,940 versus $26,252 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,005. 8.00% of the population and 5.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.00% are under the age of 18 and 6.90% are 65 or older.
