Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,151 people, 1,647 households, and 1,133 families residing in the town. The population density is 493.1/km² (1,279.1/mi²). There are 1,823 housing units at an average density of 216.6/km² (561.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 85.69% White, 3.08% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 8.79% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. 14.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,647 households out of which 31.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% are non-families. 26.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
