Dream Theater

Dream Theater are a progressive metal band from the USA. Their current members are:

Their major albums, along with perceptions of the fans' opinions:

Their first double CD, which is rather unusual for a band so far off the musical mainstream. Well-received by the fans, many stated that it is their "heaviest" album yet, without losing their musical ingenuity.

A concept album. Well-received, especially as it removed doubts about the band's musical direction which surfaced with the highly controversial "Falling Into Infinity" album (see below). People feared they would fall prey to commercialism, but this album proved they would stay true to their unique musical style. (As far as I know, "Falling Into Infinity" was quite a flop, commercially. The rumor is that the music companies decided to let them do their thing after that, realizing they'll sell more CDs this way.)

Probably the most controversial DT album ever. While not rejected generally, many fans were disturbed by the taste of commercialism that came with this album. In terms of musical complexity, a lot of songs were far below what was expected from Dream Theater, maybe an attempt to make the songs more "radio friendly"

An EP containing the 20-minute-song "A Change Of Seasons" and some cover versions the band members always wanted to do.

A well-rounded album, darker and heavier in style than "Images and Words". Sounds more "mature" and "dense" than IaW, nontheless, some (many?) fans prefer IaW.

A classic DT album. The track "Pull me under" was an unexpected success, receiving a lot of airplay.

A good album, but handicapped by a horrible sound quality and a less-than-great singer. Many fans wish DT would re-record this album, but it doesn't appear the band is too interested in that, instead concentrating on new material.

They released some more live albums and singles (EPs?), which are not listed here. See http://www.dreamtheater.net/ for more info.
