Drag

The word drag has several meanings:

  • In computing, to drag is to click the mouse button and hold it down while moving the mouse laterally.

  • In music, to drag is to play slower than the indicated tempo. Dragging is usually unintentional and undesirable, since it tends to drain the energy out of the music.

  • Drag is also slang for any costume, referring in particular to the ostentatiously glamorous costumes of the type worn by drag queens and kings. Since at least the days of vaudeville, any male entertainer costumed in women's clothing for a comedy sketch has been said to be "in drag." Milton Berle was especially known for such routines on early television. (Compare "drag role" for a man costumed as a woman with "pants role" for a woman costumed as a man.)
