Dover Castle was built near the site of Roman lighthouse (or Pharos). It may have had a motte and bailey design before its current state. There are tunnels under it, which were probably used for smuggling as well as a shelter from bombs in the Second World War. The Chief Warden of the Cinque Ports[?] is the head of the castle.
