Dooly County, Georgia

Dooly County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 11,525. The county's county seat is Vienna, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,028 km² (397 mi²). 1,018 km² (393 mi²) of it is land and 11 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.06% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,525 people, 3,909 households, and 2,767 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (29/mi²). There are 4,499 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 45.97% White, 49.54% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 2.88% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 4.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,909 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.10% are married couples living together, 20.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% are non-families. 25.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 109.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 111.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,980, and the median income for a family is $35,337. Males have a median income of $26,670 versus $19,076 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,628. 22.10% of the population and 18.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.50% are under the age of 18 and 21.20% are 65 or older.
