Disaster movie

A disaster movie is a movie that has a disaster (e.g. an asteroid collides with Earth) as its subject.

They were particularily popular in the early-1970s after the successful release of The Poseidon Adventure[?] in 1972, which led to a rash of similar movies such as The Towering Inferno, Earthquake and Volcano. These movies all followed a similar formula, including a number of "star" actors appearing in small scenes attempting to escape disaster. The genre burned out by the mid-1970s when they were being produced more and more quickly and with less production effort.
