Dauphin County, Pennsylvania

Dauphin County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 251,798. The county contains Harrisburg, the state capital. Its county seat is Harrisburg6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,444 km² (558 mi²). 1,360 km² (525 mi²) of it is land and 84 km² (32 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.78% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 251,798 people, 102,670 households, and 66,119 families residing in the county. The population density is 185/km² (479/mi²). There are 111,133 housing units at an average density of 82/km² (212/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.11% White, 16.91% African American, 0.16% Native American, 1.96% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.97% from other races, and 1.85% from two or more races. 4.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 102,670 households out of which 29.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.60% are married couples living together, 12.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.60% are non-families. 30.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.30% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 30.10% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 92.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.80 males.
