Count palatine

A count palatine functioned, especially in medieval times, and particularly during the Holy Roman Empire, as a direct royal viceroy, often becoming a more independent ruler of a palatinate.

In England, Durham formed a "County Palatine".

In Germany, the Rhineland Palatinate, now the state of Rheinland-Pfalz has played an important historical role.
