Columbia City, Oregon

Columbia City is a city located in Columbia County, Oregon. It was named for the Columbia River, on whose banks it sits. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,571.


Columbia City was founded in 1867 by Jacob and Joseph Caples, with asperations of becoming the terminus for Ben Holliday[?]'s Willamette Valley railroad. As Portland, Oregon was the terminus of the west side line in 1870, Columbia city never achieved its expected growth.

Currently, Columbia City serves as a suburb of St. Helens, Oregon.

Geography Columbia City is located at 45°53'31" North, 122°48'48" West (45.891952, -122.813205)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²). 1.9 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 31.82% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,571 people, 595 households, and 448 families residing in the city. The population density is 808.8/km² (2,106.6/mi²). There are 640 housing units at an average density of 329.5/km² (858.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.61% White, 0.38% African American, 1.34% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 1.46% from two or more races. 2.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 595 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.2% are married couples living together, 5.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.7% are non-families. 19.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 30.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 105.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $59,545, and the median income for a family is $62,596. Males have a median income of $46,964 versus $33,125 for females. The per capita income for the city is $25,266. 4.5% of the population and 2.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 5.1% are under the age of 18 and 3.7% are 65 or older.
