History

Clinton was originally founded by the Surratt family in the 1770s. The town, then named Surratt's Villa, became known as Surrattsville in the 1800s. A principal residence was one of the two boardinghouses run by Mary Surratt[?], located on the road into Southern Maryland.

On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln, stopped by the Surratts boardinghouse as he fled Washington, D.C. Because of her complicity in the Lincoln assassination, Mary Surratt was hanged at Capitol Prison in Washington. The U.S. Post Office renamed the town Robeysville. In 1879 Robeysville was renamed Clinton. The local high school, however, retains the name of Surrattsville, and local historians have continually urged Clinton to regain its unique name.

President Bill Clinton briefly visited Clinton in a campaign stop in 1996.

Clinton is also the home town of Maryland Senate Majority Leader Thomas V. "Mike" Miller.
