Clark Gable

Clark Gable (February 1, 1901 - November 16, 1960) was an American actor born in Cadiz, Ohio. Gable won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his 1934 performance in the film It Happened One Night.

In one well-known scene in It Happened One Night, Gable's star power became apparent when he removed his shirt and revealed his bare chest. Across the United States, women stopped buying undershirts for their husbands. He is best-known today, however, for his performance as Rhett Butler in the 1939 classic Gone With the Wind.

Gable's appearance in 1935's Mutiny on the Bounty as Fletcher Christian makes Gable one of a select few actors to appear in three films that have won an Academy Award for Best Picture. That same year he fathered Loretta Young's illegitimate daughter, Judy, who later was known as Judy Lewis. Judy eventually learned the truth which she wrote about, and alienated herself from her mother for a period of time.

Gable's marriage in 1939 to Carole Lombard was reportedly the happiest episode in his personal life, and ended with Lombard's death in a plane crash in 1942.

His last film was The Misfits, which also featured Marilyn Monroe in her last screen performance. Gable died of a massive heart attack in Los Angeles, California in 1960 at the age of 59. He was interred in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Glendale, California.
