Hopping corpse

Redirected from Chinese vampire

(千里行屍) In Chinese folklore[?], corpses were transported over long distance to their home town for burial under the command of a wizard who could control the corpses to hop on their own feet.

A person touched by a hopping corpse (僵屍) would die instantly. A column of corpses hopping along in the middle of the night would be a scary sight that keeps many people away. Some people speculate that those hopping corpses were just smugglers in disguise who wanted to scare off the law enforcement officers.

Note that 僵屍 is also the Chinese name for vampire. Hence a hopping corpse is also called a Chinese Vampire. It was a hit topic in Hong Kong movies during 1980s, some movies even feature the two different "vampires" together. The Chinese words for vampires loosely translate into English as Gyonshee.
